Ro-Ro Service – Cargo Measurement Policy

As you may already know when shipping oversize cargo overseas via roll-on roll-off service it’s important to have the accurate dimensions of your cargo. Your shipping price will be based on these dimensions. Here’s a guideline how ports in USA will measure your cargo:

1. Campervans /RV’s – in regard to height, these units will be measured to its maximum height including skylights or air conditioning units. The width of the unit is to be measured to the extremities including mirrors. If mirrors can be folded in, it will be the responsibility of the customer’s driver delivering the cargo to ensure that the mirrors are folded in. Handles and awnings will also be included in the width measurement.

2. Trucks – will be measured to the full length & width extremities of the truck including mirrors. If mirrors can be folded in, it will be the responsibility of the driver delivering the cargo to ensure that the mirrors are folded in. In regards to height, the unit will be measured to the top of the cab including any smokestack or wind scoop.

3. Boat on own trailer – will be measured on the basis of the full length & width of the trailer to the full height of the boat including visor & canopy. Outboard motors and/or swim steps will be added to the full length measurement of the unit. Drivers must ensure that canopies are stowed in the locked position otherwise the full height of the boat with canopy in full extended position will be included. Unfortunately due to stowage & safety considerations, it will not be possible to fold back tongues on trailers which have removable pins.

4. Boat on a cradle – to be measured to the full length, width & height extremities whether cradle frame or boat (including visor).

5. Self-propelled machinery – to be measured as per ‘Trucks’. However with machines such as motor graders, if the front blade (or other type of accessory) can be maneuvered into a position thus reducing length, then the measurement should be calculated on this reduced length. It is the responsibility of the terminal labor to ensure that the length is minimized in the rest position prior to measurement.

6. Lumber/Timber Packs – to be calculated on the basis of net measurement i.e. the actual cargo dimensions, not the dimensions based on the pallet base that the cargo is loaded on.
